What Causes Morning Headaches?

Many people suffer regularly from headaches shortly after they wake up in the morning so what causes morning headaches? It used to be thought that both tension and morning headaches were caused by muscle tension - hence the term ‘tension’ headache. Nowadays however it has been shown that there is a wide variety of different causes for tension and morning headaches and indeed we now talk about ‘tension-type’ rather than ‘tension’ headaches. The list of causes for tension-type and morning headaches is very long and includes poor posture or an awkward sleeping position, excessive consumption of caffeine, eye strain (a common cause of morning headaches for those who read in bed before sleep), smoking and stress.
