Prostate biopsy procedure — what is it all about?

Perhaps your doctor has told you that you need to consider a prostate biopsy procedure. Just what is that all about? A biopsy is nothing more than taking a tissue sample from some area of the human body — in this case, from the prostate gland. To do that a variety of methods are used, usually utilizing a number of small needles to extract small tissue samples from a number of different locations throughout the prostate gland. To perform the biopsy the surgeon will generally go in through the wall the rectum, or in other cases will insert the needles through the urethra.
